Fuse board upgrades

Fuse Board Upgrade Electrician in Ripon

Still got a fuse box with fuse wire, or a board with no RCD? A modern consumer unit is one of the best safety upgrades a home can have.

Your fuse board decides how quickly the power cuts out when something goes wrong. Older boards with rewireable fuses or a single RCD can leave you exposed, or plunge half the house into darkness when one appliance fails.

A modern board with RCBOs protects each circuit separately, and surge protection guards electronics against spikes. Replacing a board in Ripon is normally done in a day. Every circuit is tested first, because a new board can expose faults the old one was hiding, and you’ll hear about anything we find before work continues.

Time to replace your fuse board if

  • It has fuse wire or cartridge fuses rather than switches
  • There’s no RCD, or one RCD covering everything
  • The case is plastic and sits under the stairs
  • It buzzes, smells warm or has scorch marks
  • One faulty appliance turns off half the house
  • There are no spare ways for a charger, heat pump or extension

How a board replacement works

  1. Check the existing circuits

Earthing, bonding and each circuit are tested so the new board goes onto a sound installation.

  2. Swap the board

Power is off for most of the day while the new metal-cased board goes in, with every circuit labelled.

  3. Test and certify

Everything is tested, you get an Electrical Installation Certificate, and the work is notified under Part P.

Fuse boards in Ripon’s older homes

A lot of Ripon’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces and townhouses have had their boards replaced once already, often decades ago. Boards from the 1980s and 1990s, or older ones in cellars, are common. If you’re planning an EV charger, heat pump or kitchen refit, upgrading the board first usually makes the rest easier.

Fuse board questions

How long does a new fuse board take?

Usually a working day, with the power off for most of it. We’ll agree a start time that works for you.

Does the new board have to be metal?

Yes. Since 2016, consumer units in homes must have a non-combustible enclosure, which in practice means metal.

What paperwork will I get?

An Electrical Installation Certificate, plus a Building Regulations compliance certificate once the work is notified under Part P.
